Biver AB in Steel: A 38mm First for Independent Swiss Watchmaking
The Biver AB represents a series of firsts for the independent Swiss watchmaker. It is the maison’s first steel wristwatch, its first manual-wind calibre and its most compact case to date, at 38mm in diameter and 9.8mm thick.
Why a steel Biver matters
Steel is not inherently revolutionary, but it represents a meaningful change for a young haute-horlogerie brand previously associated with precious-metal creations. The AB is not merely a case-material swap: Biver describes a new watch developed from the ground up in response to discussions with collectors close to its atelier in Givrins, Switzerland.
A smaller case and a dedicated calibre
At 38mm, the AB moves toward a more compact profile without presenting itself as an entry-level compromise. The brand’s first hand-wound movement reinforces the appeal of direct interaction with mechanical watchmaking: winding the watch becomes part of the ownership ritual. Finishing, dial work and construction remain central to the project.
What this means for independent brands
For independent makers, a coherent product is not defined by one specification alone. Case proportions, movement architecture, materials and the wearer’s experience have to fit together. Biver’s AB illustrates how a small watch can carry a substantial technical and creative ambition.
